Ducks erupt for three third-period goals in 5-1 rout of Jets

WINNIPEG — Anaheim turned a tight road game into a third-period pullaway Friday, riding goals from Mikael Granlund, Tim Washe and Judd Caulfield to a 5-1 win over the Winnipeg Jets at Canada Life Centre.

Sam Colangelo and Nikita Nesterenko also scored for the Ducks, who moved to 3-1-0 behind a three-goal final period. Beckett Sennecke and Jeff Malott each supplied two assists, while Lukas Dostal stopped 15 shots in the Anaheim crease.

Winnipeg entered the night on a three-game winning streak, but the Jets could not solve Anaheim until late in the third. Their 3-1-1 start took its first regulation loss of the season as Clay Stevenson made 12 saves.

Caulfield opened the scoring at 14:41 of the first period, collecting the rebound of Malott’s shot after the forward broke in partially alone. The goal was Caulfield’s first in the NHL, and it gave the Ducks a lead they never surrendered.

Anaheim doubled its advantage at 5:20 of the second. Caulfield moved the puck through the neutral zone to spring a 2-on-1, and Washe finished the play with Malott alongside him.

The Ducks took control for good early in the third when Sennecke delivered a backhand pass to Colangelo at the top of the crease. Colangelo converted at 4:25 to make it 3-0.

Kyle Connor briefly gave Winnipeg a push at 10:36. Mark Scheifele spun and found Connor with a cross-ice feed, sending him in alone, and Connor beat Dostal on the blocker side for his sixth goal of the season.

The goal also carried a franchise-history milestone. Connor reached 329 career goals, moving past Ilya Kovalchuk into sole possession of third place on the combined Winnipeg Jets/Atlanta Thrashers scoring list.

Granlund answered before the Jets could build any further momentum, snapping a wrist shot from just inside the blue line at 14:06 to restore Anaheim’s three-goal cushion. Nesterenko then sealed the result with an empty-net goal at 19:19.

The Ducks left Winnipeg with contributions spread through the lineup, including a first NHL goal from Caulfield and a steady night from Dostal as Anaheim closed out a convincing road victory.
