Rybakina stopped Sabalenka’s bid for a third consecutive US Open title in Queens, ending the Belarusian’s hold on both the trophy and the top ranking.
The victory makes Rybakina the 30th player to reach No. 1 in the WTA singles rankings. Sabalenka acknowledged the result after the final, saying Rybakina had been the stronger player on the day, while adding that she remains determined to continue improving.
Season implications
Rybakina is also the first singles player to qualify for the 2026 WTA Finals. Her New York title follows a fortnight that moved her to the summit of the rankings and delivered her third Grand Slam singles championship.
