Etihad Considers Legal Action Against Premier League Over Manchester City Case

In Manchester, Etihad’s long-standing partnership with City has entered the wider debate around the club’s financial case, with the Abu Dhabi airline rejecting any suggestion that it took part in improper commercial arrangements and considering legal action against the Premier League.

The news from the club

Etihad is among the businesses linked to sponsorship agreements being examined during a nine-year period covered by the investigation into Manchester City. The case concerns allegations that the club overstated revenue in order to secure financial advantages said to exceed €1 billion.

The airline has firmly denied involvement in any irregular commercial activity. It has also challenged the Premier League’s public management of the matter, arguing that the way information about the investigation has emerged has harmed its reputation.

Etihad said it was never approached directly by the Premier League during the process and therefore had no opportunity to supply material it believes could have been relevant to the inquiry. The company is now taking legal advice on possible steps to protect its interests.

It also raised concerns over leaks and the circulation of details surrounding the case, noting that its name does not appear directly in the commission’s report despite the reputational impact it says has followed.

A partnership rooted at the Etihad Stadium

The relationship between Etihad and Manchester City dates back to 2009, when the airline’s name became attached to the club’s stadium. Over that period, Etihad has contributed hundreds of millions of euros through its commercial agreement with the English side.

Despite the dispute around the investigation, the airline said its commitment to Manchester City and the club’s supporters remains intact.

“Etihad is immensely proud of its lengthy association with Manchester City,” the company said. “The Etihad name has been carried proudly by the club and its stadium for many years, and this partnership has helped us reach millions of supporters across the world.”
