Rouen struck before the evening had properly settled, and the league leaders did not let go. A 1-0 home win over Aubagne, combined with Caen’s defeat at Concarneau, has given FC Rouen a five-point cushion before next Thursday’s meeting between the two sides.
Quick facts
- FC Rouen beat Aubagne 1-0 after Woobens Pacius scored inside 40 seconds.
- Aubagne goalkeeper Issiaka Touré was sent off shortly after the half-hour mark.
- Caen lost 2-0 away to Concarneau and fell three positions in the table.
- La Roche-sur-Yon moved second after Matys Vrignon’s stoppage-time winner against Valenciennes.
- Fleury drew 1-1 with Thionville, with Yanis Verdier scoring again.
Pacius put Rouen ahead almost immediately, finishing after Issiaka Karamoko found him in space. The Normans had a numerical advantage for much of the contest but could not add a second goal, although the early strike was enough to preserve their position at the summit.
Aubagne’s Touré endured a sharp turn in fortunes. The 21-year-old goalkeeper had just received his first call-up to the France Under-21 squad, but was dismissed after the referee ruled that he had handled the ball outside his penalty area.
It was Touré’s final club appearance before reporting to Clairefontaine. He left the pitch visibly frustrated after the red card.
Caen, who began the round directly behind Rouen, were beaten 2-0 by Concarneau. Jimmy Halby opened the scoring in the 66th minute with a finish from the edge of the box, before Stan Janno made it two three minutes later from Baptiste Macon’s cutback.
The result lifts Concarneau to third, behind La Roche-sur-Yon, and level on points with Thionville. Caen’s loss was especially costly, with the side dropping three places before their trip to face the leaders in the eighth-round opener.
La Roche-sur-Yon claimed second place with a dramatic 3-2 victory over Valenciennes. Matys Vrignon settled a lively match in the third minute of added time, sending a superb strike beyond the visiting goalkeeper.
Valenciennes had played from the 21st minute with 10 men after Abdelwahed Wahib’s dismissal. The Vendée club are now two points behind Rouen.
Elsewhere, Fleury extended their unbeaten run to three games by drawing 1-1 against Thionville. Yanis Verdier, 23, continued his fine scoring sequence with an equaliser that came from a cross which found the far top corner.
Verdier has now scored four times across his last two matches. Fleury may regret a series of missed first-half chances, but took another point from a contest that kept Thionville level with Concarneau.
