Fenerbahçe marked their first Champions League appearance in 18 years by fighting back for a 1-1 draw with Roma in Istanbul, a result that left both sides with a point from the opening night of the league phase.

Roma, back in the competition for the first time since 2019 and due to face Real Madrid next, arrived at Şükrü Saracoğlu Stadium with a perfect domestic start behind them: nine points from three Serie A matches. For much of the first half, that authority showed. The Italians kept possession patiently and gradually reduced Fenerbahçe’s counter-attacking threat.
The hosts initially found openings when Bartuğ Elmaz and Kerem Aktürkoğlu tested Mile Svilar, although neither effort seriously troubled the Roma goalkeeper. At the other end, Paulo Dybala was denied by Ederson Moraes after finding room on the right.

The equaliser changed the rhythm of the contest. Vedat Muriqi, quiet before the break, had a major opportunity to put Fenerbahçe ahead after N’Golo Kanté’s forward surge created the opening, but Svilar won the one-on-one.
As the stands grew louder, the tension travelled onto the pitch through a series of fouls and confrontations. Fenerbahçe carried the greater late threat. With around 15 minutes remaining, substitute Romelu Lukaku led a break before Oğuz Aydın struck from close range; Devyne Rensch got a touch and Svilar, falling as he reacted, pushed the ball away.
Roma survived again in the closing stages when Nathan Aké met Levent Mercan’s free-kick with a header that struck the crossbar. Neither side found a winner, leaving a draw that reflected Roma’s stronger first half and Fenerbahçe’s forceful response after the restart.
