FIFA has set the timing for the next Intercontinental Cup, the competition that brings together continental champions from across the world, with South American interest already turning towards Estudiantes.
A global trophy on the calendar
The Intercontinental Cup will again provide a meeting point for the titleholders from each confederation. FIFA has now confirmed when the tournament’s trophy will be contested, placing another major international date on the club calendar.
- The competition is reserved for the champions of the different continental tournaments.
- Its format gives clubs from outside Europe a route towards an international final-stage occasion.
- South America’s representative will emerge from the Copa Libertadores.
Estudiantes and the Libertadores route
For Estudiantes, known across Argentina as El Pincha, the question is whether their Libertadores campaign can carry them all the way to continental glory and a place in FIFA’s event.
The La Plata club would need to win the Copa Libertadores to claim South America’s berth. Until that outcome is decided, their possible presence in the Intercontinental Cup remains a prospect rather than a confirmation.
