FIFA has again declined to name the stadium that will host the 2030 World Cup final after Moroccan football chief Fouzi Lekjaa said the match would be played at Casablanca’s Grand Stade Hassan II, a venue still under construction.
FIFA leaves 2030 final venue undecided
Lekjaa made the assertion during an election gathering as Morocco’s campaign opened, saying the tournament’s final would go to the new Casablanca stadium. FIFA responded that no such decision has been made.
The governing body repeated its position from 5 August 2026: “FIFA will make a decision in due course.” It also rejected claims that its president had promised Morocco the final, calling that suggestion false and misleading.
FIFA has not yet published the full allocation of 2030 host venues across the tournament. As a result, neither the final stadium nor the distribution of matches among the co-host countries has been confirmed.
Morocco’s place in the centenary tournament
The 2030 World Cup will be jointly staged by Spain, Portugal and Morocco. Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay will each host an opening match involving their own national team, marking 100 years since the first World Cup in 1930, which was held entirely in Montevideo.
Lekjaa is both head of Moroccan football and the minister delegate responsible for the budget. A prominent figure in the liberal Authenticity and Modernity Party, he has also been closely associated with Morocco’s rise in international football in recent years.
FIFA leadership pressure remains in the background
The dispute over the final comes amid wider strain around FIFA’s leadership. A proposed plan to sell a share of future World Cup revenues to private investors was abandoned after substantial opposition.
The loss of backing from several national associations, along with the prospect of alternative candidates emerging, has raised questions over the leadership’s future. Morocco’s growing importance within FIFA has also been viewed in that broader political context.
