Michael Sweetney, the former Georgetown standout who spent four seasons in the NBA with the New York Knicks and Chicago Bulls, has died at 43.
Sweetney arrived in the league after a powerful college run with the Hoyas, where his interior scoring and rebounding made him one of the most productive big men in the Big East. The Knicks selected him with the ninth overall pick in the 2003 NBA Draft.
He played three seasons in New York, working through the frontcourt rotation as the club searched for consistency around the basket. Sweetney later joined the Bulls for the 2006-07 season, his final NBA campaign.
In all, Sweetney appeared in four NBA seasons with the Knicks and Bulls. His death brings a premature close to the life of a player remembered first for his Georgetown production, then for the high expectations that followed him into the league.
