Francisco Conceicao’s frustration briefly became Juventus’ most visible image in Vigo, as the Portuguese winger reacted angrily to being substituted in the 64th minute of the match against Celta Vigo.
Conceicao was replaced by Nico Gonzalez after a difficult individual display, one that reflected Juventus’ wider struggles on the afternoon. As he left the pitch, the 22-year-old struck the bench several times before arguing with a member of the technical staff and heading straight down the tunnel.
The incident unfolded within seconds, but did not last for the remainder of the game. After several minutes in the dressing room, Conceicao returned to the touchline and took his place on the Juventus bench alongside his team-mates.
Spalletti seeks greater control
Luciano Spalletti’s decision pointed to a search for more composure in the final third and around the penalty area. Nico Gonzalez was introduced with the intention of giving Juventus a clearer presence in dangerous attacking situations.
It was not the first recent occasion on which Spalletti had acted early with Conceicao. At Cagliari, the Juventus coach had left the winger out after half-time following a poor first half. In Vigo, the change came later, but it prompted a far sharper response from the player.
The episode leaves Juventus with a small but telling internal moment to manage: a talented wide player unhappy with his afternoon, and a coach prepared to make decisive adjustments when the match is not developing as required.
