Lisbon watched Sporting let a decisive league opportunity slip away as a commanding home start against Arouca dissolved into a 2-2 draw, leaving the champions unable to move above Benfica and level with Porto before their rivals play later in the round.
Sporting surrender a two-goal advantage
- Gonçalo Inácio gave Sporting the lead in the third minute, setting the tone for a first half in which the Lisbon side were markedly superior.
- Colombian forward Luis Suárez doubled the advantage in the 17th minute, finishing a move created by Spanish full-back Iván Fresneda.
- Fresneda’s assist came during an important international period for the Madrid-born defender, who has been selected by Spain’s Under-21 side and could be considered for the senior squad following Pedro Porro’s injury.
- The match changed after the interval when Sporting defender Zeno Debast was sent off in the 54th minute.
- Arouca, trailing by two and with little left to protect, pushed forward against the 10 men. Fontán converted a penalty in the 81st minute.
- Nandín struck six minutes later to complete the comeback and deny Sporting a result that would have transformed the top of the table, at least temporarily.
Arouca seize the late opening
For much of the evening, Sporting appeared set to take advantage of the scheduling gap around Benfica and Porto. Inácio’s early finish and Suárez’s second goal had placed the hosts in control, with Fresneda contributing from the right in a performance that will only strengthen attention around his international prospects.
Debast’s dismissal, however, gave Arouca the opening they needed. Fontán’s penalty brought anxiety into the closing stages, and Nandín’s 87th-minute equaliser erased Sporting’s earlier work in a matter of minutes. Instead of climbing above Benfica and drawing alongside Porto, Sporting must now wait on the rest of the weekend’s fixtures after a costly night in Lisbon.
