In Istanbul, Galatasaray have found a timely European lift before one of the city’s defining fixtures. Wednesday’s 4-2 Champions League win away to Lille delivered their first points of the campaign and sent the Turkish champions into Monday’s derby with Fenerbahçe carrying renewed belief.
A first European win changes the mood
Galatasaray had begun their Champions League league-phase campaign with defeats to Sporting and Barcelona, making the trip to northern France a significant test. Their response at Lille was emphatic, even after a difficult opening half, as they recovered to claim a 4-2 victory.
Brazilian midfielder Gabriel Sara, one of the side’s prominent performers, said the result had strengthened the squad at an important point in the season.
“That first win was hugely important,” Sara said. “It makes the group stronger and gives us confidence. We had a somewhat complicated first half, but the team responded and fought for a result that is vital for our progress.”
- Galatasaray earned their opening three points in this season’s Champions League.
- The victory moved the Istanbul club into the playoff qualification places.
- Sara supplied the corner kick that led to Galatasaray’s third goal and the turnaround in the match.
- Their next Champions League assignment is at home to Stuttgart on 3 November.
The city turns towards Fenerbahçe
Before Stuttgart arrive in Istanbul, Galatasaray face the more immediate pressure of the intercontinental derby. They host Fenerbahçe on Monday 26 in the ninth round of the Turkish league, with kick-off set for 15:30 Brasília time.
Galatasaray, the reigning four-time Turkish champions, sit second with 19 points. Leaders Amedspor are one point ahead but have played a match more, while Fenerbahçe stand third on 16 points.
Sara, who came through at São Paulo, described the occasion as one that reaches far beyond the pitch.
“The derby is always a match apart, when the city stops and everyone talks about it,” he said. “We prepare for moments like this. We are ready, and with the support of our fans we want another win.”
Sara’s growing weight in Istanbul
Now 27, Sara is in his third season with Galatasaray, having joined the club in 2024. During his time there he has won two Turkish league titles and the Turkish Cup.
- He has recorded two goals and two assists across eight Süper Lig appearances this season.
- His total of 28 key passes is among the leading figures in the competition.
- His set-piece contribution in Lille offered another reminder of his importance as Galatasaray balance domestic title ambitions with their European recovery.
