Gavin McKenna’s first NHL shift is set for Tuesday night at Scotiabank Arena, where the 18-year-old Toronto Maple Leafs forward will make his debut against the Montreal Canadiens in the season opener.
McKenna, selected first overall in the 2026 NHL Draft, took his rookie lap before the game and received a loud welcome from the home crowd during player introductions. Toronto and Montreal are scheduled to drop the puck at 7 p.m. ET, with TVAS and SN carrying the matchup.
A debut to remember
The top pick said the occasion will carry plenty of weight, with family and friends on hand in Toronto to see his first NHL game.
“It’s going to be a special moment for me and my family,” McKenna said before the opener. “Obviously, it’s going to be the game I remember most.”
McKenna said even thinking about stepping onto the ice in front of his supporters gave him chills.
Maple Leafs open against Canadiens
Toronto begins its season on home ice against its longtime rival, with McKenna joining the Maple Leafs lineup for the first time. The rookie’s introduction added another jolt to an already charged opening-night building as the Leafs prepare to host Montreal.
