Football’s governing body has moved to calm a growing storm around its decision-making, with FIFA president Gianni Infantino proposing a formal consultation on governance reform.
Infantino calls for consultation
- On Monday, Infantino wrote to FIFA’s Council and the presidents of all 211 member associations.
- In the letter, he proposed a direct, structured and time-limited consultation involving the confederations, member associations and other relevant stakeholders.
- The stated aim is to examine how FIFA can further strengthen its decision-making procedures.
Infantino said he would ask the FIFA Council to organise the process, framing it as a route towards improving the way the organisation takes major decisions.
Governance questions after commercial project
FIFA has been under pressure since details emerged of an abandoned plan to create a commercial company that would have been opened to private investors.
The proposed consultation is intended to address the governance concerns raised by that episode, with the world body now seeking input from its confederations, national associations and affected parties before any reform process takes shape.
