Barcelona’s second Champions League league-phase victory arrived with a commanding second-half display at Galatasaray, and the night in Istanbul sharpened an increasingly valuable selection battle on the left wing. Anthony Gordon and Karim Adeyemi both scored as Hansi Flick’s side ran away with the contest, giving the coach two in-form options for a demanding European schedule.
| Player | Shots | Shots on target | Passes completed | Possession losses | Recoveries |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Anthony Gordon | 5 | 4 | 20/20 | 6 | 2 |
| Karim Adeyemi | 4 | 2 | 15/17 | 5 | 0 |
Flick selected Gordon from the start in Turkey, but Adeyemi’s second-half introduction underlined why there can be no room for complacency. The German winger struck Barcelona’s fourth goal with a precisely placed finish across goal, taking his total for the club to four goals, including two in the Champions League.
Gordon turns pressure into production
Gordon had already opened his Barcelona scoring account against Getafe and has now found the net in consecutive matches. His recent goals answer the criticism that had accompanied praise for his pressing and defensive work, with the Englishman beginning to convert promising performances into decisive output.
Against Galatasaray, he was among Barcelona’s most persistent attacking threats, repeatedly testing the home side from distance. There was one clear chance he failed to take when Lamine Yamal supplied the ball for a simple finish, only for Gordon to send it into the side netting. Yamal also created Gordon’s goal.
His five attempts, four of them on target, came alongside flawless passing accuracy. That blend of direct running, work without the ball and growing end product has made him Flick’s preferred starter on the left, at least for now.
Adeyemi makes the contest stronger
Adeyemi needed little time after replacing Gordon to make his own statement. Despite fewer minutes, he produced four shots, hit the target twice and completed 15 of 17 passes. His only five turnovers were one fewer than Gordon’s, although he did not register a recovery.
The two wide players have added pace and the ability to break through opposing defensive lines, while also supplying goals and assists. Their rivalry for one place has become one of Barcelona’s most significant internal contests, with both meeting the expectations that accompanied their arrivals.
For Flick, it is a welcome complication. Barcelona’s supporters have embraced both players, and with the Champions League campaign demanding depth as well as quality, the left flank now offers competition rather than compromise.
