Thessaloniki’s Toumba Stadium will host a Nations League meeting with a distinctly different mood on each bench on 4 October, as unbeaten Greece welcome Germany while protecting their place at the top of the group.
The news from the club
Greece arrive in the fourth round still undefeated after a dramatic 2-2 draw with the Netherlands. The home side had appeared set to take all three points after a commanding first half, only for the Dutch to overturn a two-goal deficit late on.
Christos Tzolis thought he had opened the scoring in the 13th minute, but his effort was ruled out. Fotis Ioannidis then put Greece ahead with a low, angled finish into the right corner, before Masouras added a second before half-time.
The Netherlands found their response after the interval. Virgil van Dijk reduced the gap with a powerful close-range header, beating goalkeeper Tzolakis, and Tijjani Reijnders denied Greece victory in the 89th minute with a volley at the near post.
Germany travel to northern Greece having finally recorded their first win under coach Jürgen Klopp. After a defeat and a draw in their opening two matches, the Germans beat Serbia 2-0 at Munich’s Allianz Arena.
Tom Bischof and Florian Wirtz scored in that victory, which took Germany to four points in Group B. Greece, however, already have a win over the Germans from the opening matchday, giving the Toumba encounter added weight in the race for first place.
