Pep Guardiola has offered a public show of loyalty to Manchester City after the club was found guilty over financial irregularities, with the fallout now reaching the manager’s own standing in English football.
In a message published on Wednesday, Guardiola said he would remain behind City, its ownership, chairman, staff, players and supporters as the club faces the consequences of the case.
“Every Manchester City fan should know that I am with you, now more than ever,” Guardiola said. “I have been here, I am here and I will continue to stand with my club, our owner, our chairman, Ferran, the players, the staff, Enzo and our remarkable supporters. We will come through this together.”
A legacy under scrutiny
The Premier League investigation covered the period from 2009 to 2018, a span which included two of Guardiola’s seasons at the Etihad Stadium and the campaign in which he won his first English title.
Guardiola spent nine seasons with City, collecting every major honour available to him, including six Premier League crowns and the Champions League. Yet the scale of the financial case has prompted fierce criticism of the conditions in which that success was achieved.
One leading columnist argued that Guardiola’s legacy is now damaged by his association with a club described as having been sustained by improper commercial arrangements and companies. The criticism centred on more than €1 billion said to have been defrauded during the near-decade examined by the investigation.
The columnist posed two central possibilities: that Guardiola knew about the irregularities, which would make him complicit, or that he failed to recognise them despite their apparent scale. A third explanation, he suggested, was hypocrisy.
Questions for a manager with a remarkable record
Guardiola was acknowledged as an outstanding tactical coach whose success has travelled across several clubs. But the argument made against him was that his City years will always be viewed through the financial findings, with the club’s accountants portrayed as having played a decisive role alongside the work done on the training ground.
For Guardiola, the immediate response has been one of solidarity rather than distance. His message placed him firmly alongside City at a moment when the club’s achievements, finances and place in the modern Premier League are all being examined afresh.
