Buenos Aires had prepared the Monumental for a farewell rather than an ordinary international fixture, with Lionel Messi’s final appearance for Argentina against Benin framed by banners, tributes and the presence of those closest to the captain. Yet, for a brief moment, the stadium’s attention turned from emotion to irritation when a planned drone display opened with an insurance advertisement.
The aerial show was intended as one of the signature moments of Messi’s goodbye with the Albiceleste. Supporters looked toward the sky expecting the Argentina No. 10’s name, shirt number and images connected to a career that has carried the national side across generations.
Instead, the first formation of drones displayed Sancor Seguros branding. The response around the Monumental was immediate: whistles and boos rolled through the stands as fans objected to commercial messaging intruding on a tribute designed for their captain.
A brief interruption in a night for Messi
The advertising segment lasted only a short time, but it jarred with the atmosphere inside the Buenos Aires stadium. For those in attendance, the occasion belonged to Messi rather than a sponsor, particularly with the match against Benin marking his final game in Argentina colours.
Once the display moved on, the farewell regained its intended tone. Signs and large banners were raised for Messi, while tributes from former Argentina team-mates added to an evening of tears, messages and family celebration.
The disappointment over the drones did not overwhelm the occasion. It became a small, noisy interruption in a much larger send-off for the player who has long been the defining figure of Argentina’s national team.
