Inter Milan Stun Fiorentina Late to Stay Top of Serie A

At San Siro, Inter Milan found a way through the final minutes of a wild Sunday to turn defeat into a 2-1 win over Fiorentina and protect their place at the summit of Serie A.

Fiorentina had held the advantage deep into the eighth-round contest, only for Marcus Thuram to level in the 90th minute. Piotr Zielinski then completed the reversal from the penalty spot in the 98th, sending the Nerazzurri clear of a remarkable late escape.

Quick facts

  • Inter Milan beat Fiorentina 2-1 in Serie A’s eighth round.
  • Marcus Thuram scored the equaliser in the 90th minute.
  • Piotr Zielinski converted a penalty in the 98th minute to win it.
  • Inter lead the table on 22 points, ahead of Lazio on goal difference.
  • Fiorentina remain 18th with four points.

The finish belongs alongside a small collection of late Inter recoveries. The most recent comparable occasion came on 30 April 2011, when Giampaolo Pazzini scored twice against Cesena to rescue the Milan side.

Further back, on 9 January 2005, Inter struck at the end against Sampdoria through Christian Vieri and Uruguay’s Álvaro Recoba. Thuram and Zielinski have now added another last-gasp chapter.

The three points take Inter to 22, level with Lazio but in first place through the superior goal difference. For Fiorentina, the journey back from Milan brings no relief: they are still in the relegation zone, 18th and stranded on four points.
