Jake Sanderson Leaves Senators’ Win Over Maple Leafs With Recurring Injury

Ottawa left Toronto with a 3-2 win Saturday, but the Senators may have a larger concern on their blue line after Jake Sanderson exited in the opening period with the same undisclosed issue that interrupted his training camp.

Quick facts

  • Senators defenseman Jake Sanderson left Saturday’s game at Toronto at 12:45 of the first period and did not return.
  • Florida defenseman Gustav Forsling is a game-time call against Anaheim on Sunday.
  • Seattle put forward Jacob Melanson on injured reserve; he is expected to miss time week to week.
  • Washington defenseman Matt Roy is doubtful for Wednesday after leaving the loss in Tampa Bay.

Sanderson had departed a preseason contest Sept. 26 as a precaution, then missed practice time before getting back on the ice Friday. He removed himself from Saturday’s game before the problem worsened, coach Travis Green said, adding that the club would have a clearer picture over the next several days.

“There is some concern,” Green said. “He felt it coming on and made the smart decision to come out early.”

Ottawa heads to Boston on Monday for a 7:30 p.m. ET puck drop against the Bruins, with NESN, SN+ and TVAS carrying the game. The Senators then travel to Detroit for Tuesday’s meeting with the Red Wings.

Defenseman Artem Zub, recovering from a knee injury, and forward Andre Burakovsky, dealing with an upper-body problem, skated in non-contact sweaters Friday. Neither dressed against the Maple Leafs.

In Florida, Forsling’s availability will be settled closer to Sunday’s 8 p.m. ET game at Anaheim. Prime Video, SCRIPPS, KCOP-13 and TVAS will have the Panthers-Ducks matchup.

Forsling was scratched late before Thursday’s 4-3 overtime defeat in San Jose. The upper-body issue surfaced after he scored once and logged 22:40 in Florida’s 1-0 opening-night victory over Carolina on Sept. 29.

The Panthers called up forward Sam Lafferty and defenseman Alexander Petrovic from AHL Charlotte on Saturday, adding depth before the California stop.

Chicago played without Bowen Byram in its 4-3 loss at Buffalo on Saturday because of a family matter. The defenseman came to the Blackhawks in the June 23 trade with the Sabres and agreed to a six-year, $75 million deal July 1 that begins next season.

Byram produced a personal-best 42 points in all 82 games last season, scoring 11 goals and adding 31 assists.

Seattle will be without Jacob Melanson when it faces Calgary on Sunday at 8 p.m. ET. The forward has been placed on injured reserve with an upper-body injury and is listed week to week; Prime Video, KONG and SNW will air the game.

Melanson played 9:31 in the Kraken’s 6-2 win in Calgary on Thursday before the injury designation.

Washington is waiting on Matt Roy after the defenseman was hurt in Saturday’s 3-1 loss at Tampa Bay. Roy headed off at the 14:56 mark of the second period and did not return.

Coach Spencer Carbery said Roy would be evaluated once the Capitals returned to Washington. His status is uncertain for Wednesday’s game against the Pittsburgh Penguins.
