Jalen Hurts Expected to Miss Rest of 2026 Season With Blood Clots

Jalen Hurts is expected to miss the remainder of the 2026 season while receiving treatment for blood clots, a development that headlines a busy week of quarterback news, major injuries and roster moves across the NFL.

Key takeaways

  • Atlanta signed veteran quarterback Andy Dalton and released Cooper Rush after Rush started the Falcons’ opening two games.
  • Indianapolis dismissed general manager Chris Ballard following a 2-4 start in his 10th season in the role.
  • Rams wide receiver Davante Adams is projected to miss six to 10 weeks and could undergo a hamstring-tendon procedure.
  • Buffalo safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson received a one-game suspension after his ejection against Las Vegas.
  • Texans wide receiver Tank Dell is set to make his first game appearance since his devastating multi-ligament knee injury late in 2024.

Quarterback situations and major injury news

Atlanta added Dalton, 38, after he was released by Philadelphia on Oct. 9. Dalton’s only 2026 appearance came in Week 3, when he briefly replaced Jalen Hurts in Philadelphia’s loss to Chicago and threw an interception on his lone pass attempt.

The Falcons cut Rush, who started their first two games while Tua Tagovailoa and Michael Penix Jr. were sidelined. Rush completed 22 of 39 passes for 229 yards, one touchdown and four interceptions in two Atlanta losses.

Baltimore quarterback Lamar Jackson remains day to day with an ankle injury. He has missed the Ravens’ past two games, but coach Jesse Minter said Jackson could return to practice as soon as Wednesday.

Tampa Bay quarterback Baker Mayfield, out since Week 3 with a right-thumb injury, is expected to practice Wednesday. Elsewhere, New England quarterback Drake Maye was listed as a full participant in Monday’s estimated walkthrough report while managing a right shoulder issue.

Hurts’ expected season-ending absence leaves Philadelphia facing a major adjustment at quarterback. The 2026 campaign is expected to be over for the Eagles starter as he continues treatment for blood clots.

Houston will welcome Dell back for Sunday’s game against the Giants. Dell has not played since Week 16 of the 2024 season, when he tore his ACL, MCL and LCL, dislocated his kneecap and suffered meniscus damage.

The Rams absorbed several significant setbacks. Adams is expected to be out between six and 10 weeks after hurting his hamstring against Arizona, and he is expected to have the tendon cleaned up in a procedure. Defensive end Myles Garrett is not expected to practice this week because of a knee injury. Defensive tackle Poona Ford suffered a ruptured triceps and will miss the rest of the season, while defensive tackle Kobie Turner will go on injured reserve with a groin injury and must sit out at least four games.

Rams kicker Blake Grupe also landed on injured reserve after hurting his knee during the first half of Sunday’s game. It was Grupe’s Los Angeles debut after he had been signed off the Jets’ practice squad last week. Los Angeles is scheduled to work out kickers Brandon McManus and Matt Prater on Tuesday. Tackle Alaric Jackson has returned following his one-game suspension.

Jets cornerback Sauce Gardner is considered week to week after sustaining a mild calf strain in the loss to Tennessee. San Francisco wide receiver Mike Evans aggravated his Achilles injury during Monday’s game, but coach Kyle Shanahan said further testing is not needed and expressed hope that Evans can play in Week 7. Receiver Christian Kirk was ruled out before that game with a calf injury.

Washington running back Jacory Croskey-Merritt was placed on injured reserve with a groin injury. Fellow running back Jeremy McNichols came off injured reserve before Monday’s game against San Francisco, while linebacker Jordan Magee and cornerback Trey Amos also were activated from injured reserve. Commanders receiver Terry McLaurin, who was carted off in the loss to the 49ers, is scheduled for testing Tuesday amid concern that he sustained a serious injury. Defensive tackle Javon Kinlaw was ruled out against San Francisco with a knee injury, and linebacker Javontae Jean-Baptiste was placed on injured reserve with a pectoral issue.

Transactions, discipline and practice reports

Buffalo safety Gardner-Johnson will miss one game after the league disciplined him for unsportsmanlike conduct during the win over the Raiders. He was ejected in the second quarter of Buffalo’s 33-30 victory after spitting at a Las Vegas player. The Bills also signed cornerback Tre’Davious White to the practice squad, released practice-squad corner A.J. Woods and placed tight end Tanner Hudson on injured reserve with a pectoral injury.

Chicago’s estimated Monday walkthrough report listed running back Kyle Monangai as a non-participant with thumb and toe injuries. Guard Jonah Jackson, linebacker T.J. Edwards and linebacker Jack Sanborn were also estimated not to participate because of hip/quad, hamstring and concussion issues, respectively. Linebacker Keyshaun Elliott and defensive back Tyrique Stevenson were estimated as full participants. The Bears also added defensive back Kenechukwu Eziomume to the practice squad.

Green Bay is expected to add defensive tackle Mazi Smith to its practice squad. Packers edge rusher Micah Parsons will not practice this week as he remains on the physically unable to perform list with a knee injury. Running back Josh Jacobs has been removed from the Commissioner Exempt List.

The Texans released linebacker Aiden Fisher and defensive back Collin Wright. Indianapolis moved on from Ballard after 10 seasons as general manager, with the Colts sitting at 2-4.

The Jets signed tackles Amari Kight and Darian Kinnard to the practice squad, while tight end Chris Myarick and offensive lineman Evan Neal were released from the practice squad.

New England placed receiver Romeo Doubs on injured reserve after he hurt his shoulder in the win over the Jets. The Patriots’ estimated report also listed running back TreVeyon Henderson, tackles Will Campbell and Morgan Moses, linebacker Christian Elliss, safeties Kevin Byard and Craig Woodson, and several others with varying participation levels. Receiver A.J. Brown was limited with an ankle injury; guard Ben Brown, guard Alijah Vera-Tucker, cornerback Carlton Davis and kicker Andres Borregales were listed as non-participants.

The Patriots added receiver Ryan Miller, guard Andrew Rupcich and offensive lineman Jacob Rizy to the practice squad, promoted defensive back Elliott Davison to the active roster and released practice-squad corner D’Shawn Jamison.

Saints receiver Jordyn Tyson traveled to Paris ahead of New Orleans’ Week 7 game against Pittsburgh despite remaining on injured reserve with a hamstring injury.

Seattle tight end Elijah Arroyo is likely headed to injured reserve after injuring his shoulder in Thursday night’s loss to Denver. Guard Anthony Bradford has been designated to return to practice from injured reserve. The Seahawks also signed fullback Jackson Acker and tight end Josiah Deguara to the practice squad, while practice-squad running back Dontae McMillan and receiver Malick Meiga were released.

Running back Jordan Mason has been designated to resume practice from injured reserve. Elsewhere, guard Brett Toth was released from injured reserve through an injury settlement, while receiver Malik Turner and linebacker Jalen Graham received game-day elevations. Defensive back Erick Hallett and linebacker Austin Keys were released, and linebacker T.J. Maguranyanga was elevated for game day.
