Johan Manzambi Header Earns Aston Villa 1-0 Win at Newcastle

Aston Villa left St James’ Park with a hard-earned 1-0 win over Newcastle United, Johan Manzambi’s close-range header on 36 minutes proving enough on a tense Premier League afternoon.

Newcastle had their moments before and after the interval, but found Villa goalkeeper Zion Suzuki and a determined visiting defence in the way when it mattered. The home side’s best early opening fell to Joe Willock, who dragged a close-range effort narrowly wide after Lewis Hall’s delivery, while Yoane Wissa saw both a header and a shot blocked as Newcastle pressed.

Villa carried menace of their own. Nicolas Jackson was denied from close range in the ninth minute after Alysson’s pass, and Matty Cash sent a shot just beyond the far post after being found by Manzambi. The breakthrough arrived after Villa had begun to make their pressure count around the Newcastle box: João Gomes supplied the cross and Manzambi headed low into the left corner from close range.

The contest had already acquired the usual autumn edge by then. Newcastle’s Joelinton and Sven Botman were booked in the same 18th-minute incident, while João Gomes later went into the book for a dangerous challenge. Alysson was cautioned for simulation shortly before the Villa goal.

Newcastle had been caught offside on several promising moves, Harvey Barnes twice seeing attacks stopped by the flag in the first half. Their attempts to restore parity became more urgent after the break. Botman forced Suzuki into a save from a 49th-minute set piece, with the keeper turning the left-footed effort away near the top corner, before the hosts won another corner.

William Osula and Bazoumana Touré were introduced in the 56th minute for Willock and Matias Fernandez-Pardo, and the home side increasingly worked the ball into the area. Lewis Miley supplied crosses for Wissa and Osula, but Wissa headed over and Osula sent his header wide. Barnes and Wissa also had efforts blocked in a busy spell around the 69th minute.

Villa freshened their side with John McGinn replacing Alysson at half-time, then brought on Ross Barkley, Leon Goretzka and Ibrahim Mbaye in the second period. Manzambi went off injured when Mbaye entered, while Aaron Wan-Bissaka was forced off with an injury soon afterwards, Pau Torres taking his place.

The visitors still had chances to settle it. Barkley’s long-range drive was saved low by Lukás Horníček, Jackson had shots blocked from both sides of the penalty area, and Mbaye missed twice late on, first firing over from the left and then putting a central opportunity just wide. Goretzka also saw a strike from distance blocked.

Newcastle’s late push brought more frustration than clarity. Wissa placed an effort just wide after Joelinton’s pass, Barnes had a shot blocked after Touré’s assist, and Nico González twice struck from outside the box only to see Villa bodies block the way. Osula was booked for a dangerous foul on Torres, while González and Malick Thiaw also received yellow cards as the game became increasingly stretched.

Dan Burn replaced Joelinton in the 90th minute and six minutes of added time followed. Newcastle had one final offside call against Hall after a Miley through ball, while González’s late attempt from a Barnes pass was blocked. Villa saw out the closing seconds, including a stoppage for treatment, to secure the points from the Premier League’s seventh round on Saturday, 17 October 2026.
