Portugal’s new international chapter begins with Cristiano Ronaldo still in the squad, but Jorge Jesus has made clear that the country’s most decorated footballer will not be selected on reputation alone.
Speaking after naming his first Portugal call-up, Jesus said Ronaldo’s role in forthcoming internationals will be decided by his current level rather than the weight of a career that includes five Ballon d’Or awards. The Al Nassr forward remains part of the coach’s plans, yet his minutes will be assessed in the same way as those of every other player.
Form will determine Ronaldo’s role
Jesus insisted that past achievements will carry no special influence when he chooses his team. “What matters is his performance. The past does not count,” the Portugal coach said.
The message from the new manager is that Ronaldo’s place on the pitch is conditional. “Cristiano is a player like any other. If he performs well, he will play; if he does not, he will not,” Jesus said.
Ronaldo arrives in the national-team camp as one of football’s defining figures, with an individual record led by his five Ballon d’Or wins. Jesus acknowledged that standing, while stressing that it will not dictate his decisions.
“He has a different status and has won five Ballon d’Or awards, but does that affect my choices? No,” he said.
Acknowledging an exceptional player
Jesus did not deny Ronaldo’s singular place in the game. Asked whether the forward was different from other players, the coach’s reply was emphatic: “Without doubt.”
For Portugal, the balance is now clearly set: Ronaldo remains available and recognised as an exceptional player, but Jesus will retain the final say over his involvement during the next international fixtures.
