Turin has barely had time to settle its new goalkeeping order before Juventus were forced into an unwelcome rethink. Kamil Grabara, who arrived less than a month ago, has suffered a serious injury to his right knee and could be out for at least three months even in the most favourable scenario.
The news from the club
The setback leaves Juventus short behind Guglielmo Vicario, another recent arrival, and has opened the prospect of an emergency move before the club. Sergio Rico, the 33-year-old Spanish goalkeeper, has emerged as the leading candidate.
Rico is currently without a club after leaving Qatar’s Al Gharafa during the summer. Initial discussions have begun with the former Sevilla goalkeeper as Juventus assess their options for replacing Grabara during his absence.
Other experienced names are also being considered, including Jasper Cillessen and Neto. Juventus could still opt against signing anyone, however, and work with the goalkeepers already available in the squad.
Atalanta provides the first test
Luciano Spalletti has already looked to Juventus’ reserve ranks ahead of Sunday’s meeting with Atalanta, adding Radu to the matchday group. Whether the coach continues to rely on the young goalkeeper, or whether the club turns to the market for an established deputy to Vicario, will shape the next step in Turin.
