In northern France, on a Champions League night that asked for calm from Sporting’s new goalkeeper, Kaique Pereira delivered a clean sheet and six saves on his first appearance for the Lisbon club. The 23-year-old Brazilian helped Sporting leave Lens with a 2-0 victory on Tuesday, marking an immediate milestone after his August move from Palmeiras for R$24 million.
A first European night for Sporting’s new goalkeeper
- Sporting signed Kaique from Palmeiras in August in a deal worth R$24 million.
- His route to Lisbon followed loan spells elsewhere in Portugal, where he represented Farense and Nacional while still contracted to Palmeiras.
- Rui Borges gave him his Sporting debut away to Lens in the Champions League.
- Kaique made six stops and did not concede as Sporting won 2-0 in France.
The result gave the goalkeeper the kind of entrance few players receive in a new shirt: an away European win, a shutout and a night in which his interventions mattered.
“I am very happy to have played my first match in this shirt,” Kaique said. “Beginning with a Champions League victory makes it even more special. It is something every footballer dreams about. Now I have to keep working and help the club reach its goals for the season. This is only the start of good things ahead.”
Borges sees a long future
Sporting coach Rui Borges said the goalkeeper had taken his opening well, while stressing that development remains central to the next stage of his career.
“He was there when we needed him and showed that he is here to help, to be another option,” Borges said. “I am pleased that he took the opportunity in the best possible way. There will be moments when he makes mistakes, but that is part of football. We know he is young and has enormous potential. He has a long road ahead, with much room to grow as a goalkeeper.”
At 23, Kaique is now the fourth-youngest Brazilian goalkeeper to make a Champions League debut. Only Kauã Santos of Eintracht Frankfurt, Ederson during his Benfica period and Carlos Coronel at RB Salzburg did so at a younger age.
From Palmeiras prospect to Lisbon opportunity
Kaique’s foundations were built at Palmeiras, where he played 77 matches across the club’s youth categories and won eight titles. Internationally, he was part of Brazil’s victorious 2023 South American Under-20 Championship squad.
He is also among the goalkeepers being monitored by Carlo Ancelotti’s Brazil coaching staff. For now, though, the immediate task is in Lisbon: turning one assured evening in Lens into a sustained role at Sporting as the Champions League campaign moves on.
