In Barcelona, where prodigies quickly become symbols of a club’s future, Lamine Yamal is already speaking in the language of a player determined to leave a far longer mark on the European game. The Spain international has set out an ambition that reaches beyond early acclaim: he wants trophies, repeated success and a place in football’s enduring memory.
Yamal said his outlook has always been to aim for the highest possible level, whatever profession he might have chosen. Using a restaurant as an example, he said that if he had been a waiter, he would have wanted to become the person in charge. In football, his aim is to be remembered decades from now by young supporters who recognise that he was among the outstanding players of his era.
He is not, however, framing his career as a direct contest with Pelé or Lionel Messi. The Barcelona forward said comparisons with historic greats are not an obsession, although he wants to become the best and hopes to be considered among the game’s major figures. He believes he has the ability and the tools to reach that level, but stressed that the outcome will depend on his own work.
A target beyond one major prize
The teenager’s ambitions extend to both Barcelona’s collective objectives and the individual awards that accompany elite performance. Yamal said he has won three league titles but wants to raise that total to at least seven or eight, with the hope of collecting even more over the course of his career.
The Champions League remains a major target. He has yet to win Europe’s leading club competition and wants to change that, while also imagining a run of consecutive triumphs. Pointing to Paris Saint-Germain’s two successive wins, Yamal said he would want three in a row if he were to claim the trophy once.
His appetite is similarly clear when he considers the Ballon d’Or. If he does not win it, he said, the following year must become another chance to take it. And should he secure one award, he would want another five.
For Yamal, achievement is not a finishing line. He said there is always another task ahead and another opportunity to win, with the drive to improve remaining central even after a major success.
He also pictured the end of his playing days at home with his children, able to tell them that his own work had been done and that it was their turn. Until then, the Barcelona attacker’s message is simple: keep winning, and if a prize is missed, return the next season with the same determination.
