Lautaro Martinez Returns to Inter in Scoring Form After Argentina Duty

Lautaro Martinez returns to Appiano Gentile with another long journey behind him and a crowded October in front of him. The Inter captain scored twice during Argentina duty, against Bolivia and Burkina Faso, before leaving Buenos Aires for Italy after an emotional farewell to Leo Messi. His familiar post-break refrain could be rendered simply: “I saw, I scored, I won.” Inter now begin a run of seven matches in 21 days, starting with Parma and Club Bruges.

Key takeaways

  • Martinez has travelled more than 10,000 kilometres before rejoining Inter.
  • Inter’s programme brings seven fixtures in three weeks, with Parma followed by Club Bruges.
  • The Argentine has generally started Inter’s first match after international breaks, even when his scoring return has varied.
  • Across last season’s four breaks, he scored only once for Inter after returning from Argentina duty.
  • His stronger post-break record came in the 2023-24 title-winning campaign, when he supplied two derby assists and scored against Torino and Juventus.

Inter’s captain faces another demanding return

The question for Inter is not whether Martinez will be involved after the international break, but how quickly he can turn national-team momentum into club form. His record suggests that he has almost always been selected from the outset upon his return, despite the physical cost of transatlantic travel and the uneven nature of his performances in those fixtures.

Last season offered a mixed picture. In September, he came back after scoring once in three Argentina appearances but did not find the net against Juventus; he was then left on the bench against Ajax as part of squad rotation. The following month was more productive: after a brace against Puerto Rico, he scored once across matches against Roma and Union Saint-Gilloise in the Champions League.

November brought no goals in matches against Milan and Atletico Madrid. In March, injury ruled him out of both Argentina duty and Inter’s commitments. The overall post-break total for the previous campaign was therefore limited to one goal.

A history of decisive returns, and quieter ones

There have been more encouraging precedents. In September 2024, Martinez started Argentina’s matches in Buenos Aires and Barranquilla before returning for Inter’s 1-1 draw away to Monza. He did not score at the U-Power Stadium and endured a subdued afternoon, but the next international window produced a better response.

After starting in Buenos Aires and resting in Maturin, he returned for Inter’s draw with Venezia and then began against Roma, scoring in that match. The remaining two breaks of that season did not provide another immediate test: illness kept him out against Verona, while injury ruled him out of the Udinese fixture.

The 2023-24 season, when Inter secured their second star, was notably kinder to the striker. Following September international duty, Martinez created two goals in the 5-1 derby victory. After the next break, he scored against Torino. He also found the net at Juventus on 26 November after making two substitute appearances for Argentina, and struck again against the Turin side five days later.

There was one exception later that season. Martinez returned from two Argentina starts in mid-March but did not score against Napoli. The pattern nevertheless remained clear: he played.

The same was true in the season disrupted by the World Cup calendar. Before travelling to Qatar and winning the tournament with Argentina, Martinez went to Buenos Aires in September, scored in one of two international matches, and then returned to face Roma without scoring. His finishing did not always follow him back to Italy, but his place in Inter’s plans did.

With Parma and Club Bruges first on an unforgiving October schedule, Inter will again look to their captain to absorb the travel, lead the line and give the season’s next demanding chapter its direction.
