Lautaro Martinez Set to Lead Inter Against Club Brugge in Champions League

Inter’s visit from Parma offered Cristian Chivu a rare opportunity: Lautaro Martinez was not asked to carry the attack from the opening whistle. The captain accepted a limited rest, entering after around an hour at San Siro, with a more significant European evening already waiting. Against Club Brugge, Inter need their leading figure from the start as they look to respond to the opening Champions League defeat at Real Madrid.

The coach and the club

Leaving Lautaro out is never a simple decision for Chivu. The Argentine’s appetite for involvement is part of his value to Inter, but the coach managed his captain’s minutes after an intercontinental trip and his Argentina commitments. His substitute appearance against Parma was intended to remove the remaining fatigue without taking him entirely out of the rhythm of competition.

That management now leads into the Brugge match, where Inter have a chance to put the Bernabeu setback behind them. Lautaro did not score against Real Madrid, yet his performance in the Spanish capital underlined why Barcelona had considered him as an attacking option late in the transfer window.

Chivu will also lean on the established core of the dressing room. The ambition around Inter is not hidden: the club want to contend deep into the Champions League, and their captain has particular reasons to treat the competition as unfinished business.

A trophy still missing

Lautaro has won extensively with Argentina and has collected major honours in Milan, but the Champions League remains absent from his personal record. For a player who has reached the status of Inter captain and decisive forward, that absence carries weight.

The departure of Lionel Messi marked the close of an era with the national team, leaving players such as Lautaro with greater responsibility. At Inter, too, he is expected to set standards for a side entering the season as Italian champions.

Winning Europe’s premier club competition will require more than individual determination. Inter know that a clean run, high-level performances and favourable moments are all needed across a demanding campaign. Lautaro, however, is expected to provide his own contribution beginning with Brugge.

Brugge and the value of a result

Inter are not simply seeking a victory. In the Champions League’s new format, goal difference can carry substantial importance, making the margin of success relevant as well as the three points.

Lautaro arrives with four goals this season, all of them scored in two doubles against Napoli and Roma. Those were two major Serie A tests in which Inter made an emphatic statement, strengthening the champions’ belief in the direction of their season.

His last Champions League goal came at home to Kairat on 5 November 2025. Inter won that match, though they had treated the occasion with too little urgency before finding a way through. Brugge present a different level of opponent, and there is no room for a repeat of that lapse.

For Chivu, restoring Lautaro to the starting side is therefore about more than goals. The captain’s presence is intended to sharpen the collective focus. In this chapter of Inter’s season, his message to the group is plain: the European campaign must now begin in earnest.
