Lazio Open Floriani Mussolini Contract Talks After Rapid Rise

Five league rounds do not settle a season, but they can change a player’s place within it. Romano Floriani Mussolini has moved quickly from squad option to a serious first-team presence at Lazio, and the club are now preparing to recognise that rise with a new contract.

The coach and the club

Lazio have opened discussions with Floriani Mussolini’s representatives over an extension, despite his present deal running until 2028. There is no contractual emergency, yet the intention is clear: the 23-year-old is now viewed as an asset the club want to retain and develop.

Initial talks have already taken place and there is a basic understanding between the parties. The process is expected to continue over the coming months, while Lazio also take account of the restrictions affecting their business. A final signature is anticipated by January rather than immediately.

The proposed agreement is likely to run for five years. Floriani Mussolini currently earns around €130,000 per season, while the new deal could begin at no less than €500,000 a year, with his salary rising over the life of the contract.

His changing status has been shaped by Gennaro Gattuso’s decisions. The coach assessed him during pre-season and gave him a route into the side. Apart from the Coppa Italia match against Mantova, Floriani Mussolini has featured in every one of Lazio’s first five Serie A fixtures, accumulating 403 minutes.

At the beginning of the summer, Adam Marusic was expected to start on the right, Floriani Mussolini was an alternative, and Manuel Lazzari was available for a possible move. Marusic’s injury accelerated the younger player’s opportunity, but Lazio do not see his emergence merely as a consequence of an absence.

Gattuso has been persuaded by his running, his qualities and the room he has to improve. Marusic is returning to availability, but that does not mean the right-sided role automatically reverts to its former holder. Floriani Mussolini can continue to compete for minutes and has already established himself within the regular rotation.

A route back to Formello

The defender’s progress carries particular weight for Lazio because he came through their youth system at Formello. His route to the senior side was built through loans around Italy: Pescara in Serie C, Juve Stabia in Serie B, and Cremonese last season, where he experienced Serie A for the first time.

  1. He developed at Lazio before gaining senior experience with Pescara.
  2. A spell at Juve Stabia followed in Serie B.
  3. Last season at Cremonese brought his first campaign in the top division.
  4. He has now returned to claim a meaningful role under Gattuso.

Since Danilo Cataldi, Lazio’s academy had struggled to produce a player able to secure a lasting role with the senior squad. Floriani Mussolini is not yet at the point where five league appearances can deliver a final verdict, but the opening weeks have altered the club’s perspective.

He began the campaign looking for an opportunity. Lazio now see a player trusted by his coach, established in the group, and increasingly close to a contract that would place part of their future on the right flank in the hands of one of their own.
