Ligue 1 Clubs Drive €4.8bn in Premier League Transfers

English money has long flowed into French football, but the current surge has given Ligue 1 another sharp financial jolt. Premier League clubs have spent €4.8 billion on players arriving from France over the past two decades, with the movement accelerating again in 2026.

The latest figures come as Lille prepare to visit Arsenal on Tuesday at 21:00 and Paris Saint-Germain travel to Manchester City on Wednesday, also at 21:00, in the Champions League league phase. On the pitch, French clubs are taking on England’s elite; away from it, they remain one of the Premier League’s richest recruitment markets.

236 Ligue 1 players bought since 2006

Since 2006, Premier League sides have signed 236 players from Ligue 1. That total is substantially higher than the number recruited from either La Liga or the Bundesliga over the same period.

The gap has widened since 2025, when England’s new domestic television-rights agreement began delivering around €2 billion per season. The enhanced spending power has been felt across the French market, with fees rising and more leading talent heading across the Channel.

There have already been 21 departures from Ligue 1 to England in 2026. Three of the largest Premier League purchases from the French league in the past 20 years were completed this summer, including Liverpool’s move for Bradley Barcola and Manchester City’s signing of Ayyoub Bouaddi.

Lille lead French clubs in Premier League income

Marseille, Lyon and PSG have each completed 24 transfers to Premier League clubs since 2006, placing them among France’s most regular sellers to England.

Yet Lille have generated the greatest return. LOSC have received €748 million from Premier League clubs, making them Ligue 1’s most lucrative supplier to the English top flight across the period.

For French clubs, the pattern is clear: England’s television wealth continues to reshape the transfer market, and Ligue 1’s most valuable players remain firmly in the Premier League’s sights.
