At Anfield, Liverpool found the sharpness that Brighton could not match, turning two first-half moments into a 2-0 Premier League win and a fourth straight victory. Brighton enjoyed long spells on the ball, but the home side were more decisive where it mattered and saw out the match without conceding.
The news from the club
The visitors’ afternoon was disrupted almost immediately when Ferdi Kadıoğlu was forced off before the sixth minute with a calf injury. The early change unsettled Brighton as Liverpool began to make their counter-attacking opportunities count.
Florian Wirtz opened the scoring in the 17th minute. Liverpool broke forward, Wirtz struck from inside the penalty area and Pascal Groß’s deflection sent the ball beyond the Brighton goalkeeper.
Four minutes later, the hosts doubled their advantage. Alexander Isak met a delivery from Barcola to finish a Liverpool move and establish the 2-0 margin before half-time.
Brighton attempted to recover after the interval but struggled to turn possession into genuine threat. They managed only one shot on target during the second half, while Liverpool narrowed the spaces, protected their lead and did not need a third goal to secure the points.
The result lifts Liverpool to 15 points and fourth place, leaving them one point behind third-placed Brighton, who have 16. Liverpool’s winning run has also strengthened their push for European qualification places, while keeping both clubs close to the leading group.
The next dates
Brighton return to Premier League duty against Manchester City on 31 October. Liverpool then travel into a significant meeting with Arsenal on 1 November, a fixture that could further shape their attempt to close on the teams above them.
