Los Angeles and San Diego Lead Race to Host 2028 Women’s Club World Cup

The first Women’s Club World Cup could take shape on the American west coast in January 2028, with Los Angeles and San Diego emerging as leading host cities for FIFA’s planned 19-team tournament.

Talks over staging the inaugural edition in the United States are understood to be well advanced, although FIFA has not yet confirmed a final agreement. Qatar has also shown interest in hosting the competition, but the United States could be selected without a formal bidding process.

January window could suit FIFA calendar

Placing the tournament in January would keep it clear of the men’s Copa America, scheduled for June and July 2028 and potentially set to be held in the United States as well.

The event would follow the expanded men’s Club World Cup on American soil and give FIFA another major tournament in the country before an even larger target later in the decade.

Part of the build-up to 2031

FIFA sees the women’s club competition as a possible operational test before the 2031 Women’s World Cup. The United States is expected to co-host that tournament with Mexico, Costa Rica and Jamaica.

That four-nation World Cup project still requires formal approval at FIFA’s congress on 23 November. If it is confirmed, the 2028 club tournament in Los Angeles and San Diego would offer an early staging ground for the wider plans around the 2031 finals.
