Ludovic Magnin is spending this week inside VfB Stuttgart’s training operation as he prepares for his next coaching job. The 47-year-old Swiss coach, released by FC Basel in January 2026, is observing Sebastian Hoeness and his staff at his former club.
Magnin wants fresh ideas during his time away from management and is using the visit to study the routines of a Champions League club. He said it was important for coaches to keep collecting new input.
A familiar club and familiar faces
The former left-back played for Stuttgart from 2005 to 2010, making 103 Bundesliga appearances. He was part of the side that won the German title in 2007.
Magnin remains closely connected to the club and described himself as still belonging to the VfB family. His visit also brings a reunion with sporting director Christian Gentner, another member of Stuttgart’s 2007 championship squad.
Magnin’s most recent competitive meeting with VfB came much later. As Basel coach, he led the Swiss club to a 2-0 home win over Stuttgart in the Europa League in October 2025.
Hoeness work under observation
Despite that result, Magnin has been impressed by Stuttgart’s development under Hoeness. He sees a clearly defined style in the team and noted the pressure Stuttgart can generate in matches.
He will have another close look at the squad on Saturday, when Stuttgart host Borussia Dortmund in a Bundesliga meeting at the MHP Arena.
Magnin ready for his next post
The Stuttgart placement is not the start of a long break from coaching. Asked whether he wants to return to the touchline soon, Magnin gave a direct yes.
He is not setting a deadline, however. The former Switzerland international said the country and league matter less than joining a club with a clear philosophy and strong leadership. Until the right role arrives, he is continuing his coaching education in Stuttgart.
