Spain’s World Cup-winning cycle will continue into the next European Championship: Luis de la Fuente has agreed a new contract running until 2032, giving the national side continuity through the 2030 World Cup and the following Euros.
A six-year extension after the World Cup
- The Spanish Football Federation board, meeting at the Ciudad del Fútbol in Las Rozas under president Rafael Louzán, unanimously approved De la Fuente’s extension.
- His previous agreement had been due to expire in 2028, after the next European Championship. The revised deal adds four years and keeps him in charge until 2032.
- The decision followed Spain’s 2026 World Cup triumph, the defining achievement of a reign that began in December 2022 when he succeeded Luis Enrique.
- After naming his first squad since Spain added a second World Cup star to its shirt, De la Fuente asked for the federation to handle news of his future. By Monday, the renewal had been formally confirmed.
Louzán had indicated at the World Football Summit the previous Wednesday that the federation was close to an agreement. He said De la Fuente’s results, work and public standing justified improved terms, noting that the coach had not been among the ten best-paid international managers.
That financial issue has now been settled alongside the extension. Louzán described the agreement as an investment in “stability and trust”, backing both De la Fuente and the sporting project he leads over a run of major tournaments.
A record built across Spain’s international cycle
De la Fuente has spent 14 years within the federation structure and had already collected honours with Spain’s youth teams before taking the senior post. Louzán called him the most decorated manager in the history of the national side and said he deserved a long-term future within the organisation.
- Spain won the Nations League in 2023.
- They followed it with victory at Euro 2024.
- Portugal stopped them from retaining the Nations League in 2025, defeating Spain on penalties.
- The 2026 World Cup then delivered the peak of De la Fuente’s senior reign, with Spain taking the title after a campaign shaped by collective strength rather than individual stardom.
The manager had said he hoped to experience another World Cup like the one Spain had just won, citing the happiness of the group and the country’s shared celebration. Yet his immediate focus remained September and the next competitive assignment rather than looking as far ahead as 2030.
His Spain side have now gone 38 matches without defeat, a national record. The World Cup success also reflected a hands-on approach from the coach, who altered his line-up when required, rotating established figures including Dani Olmo, Fabián Ruiz and Pedri while retaining faith in the core of his team at decisive moments.
Futsal coach also retained
The board meeting also approved a renewal for Spain futsal manager Jesús Velasco. His new deal will run until July 2029, with the federation set to present the agreement at a later date.
