Luis Enrique’s PSG Selection Call Rekindles Star Status Debate

Three weeks after Ligue 1 fell quiet for the international break, the lights return at the Parc des Princes on Saturday night. Paris Saint-Germain host Le Mans at 20:45, with Manchester City waiting in the Champions League, and Luis Enrique has already made one selection call that has revived the familiar debate around stars and status.

Ousmane Dembélé and Nuno Mendes have been given the weekend off for the visit of the newly promoted side from Sarthe. The decision comes before a major European appointment, but it has again placed scrutiny on the way Luis Enrique manages his leading players.

Former PSG forward Guillaume Hoarau believes the Spanish coach will not alter his approach. In his view, Luis Enrique remains focused on the collective rather than on reputations inside the dressing room.

“Nothing will change,” Hoarau said. “He will keep trying to select the best team, regardless of the individual players. When Ousmane Dembélé is fit and in form, of course he plays. He has spoken again about the idea of star status, and he means it when he says it. It may be difficult to believe, but the team is what matters to him.”

Hoarau, now a Ligue 1+ pundit, expects the coach to field a side capable of carrying real weight even without Dembélé and Mendes. He also feels that a preferred XI will naturally emerge over time, although its outline is already broadly clear.

Rotation with spring in mind

Daniel Riolo sees the situation less as a question of discipline or demotion than a longer-term physical plan. For him, Luis Enrique already knows the core group he wants to rely on, with roughly 12 players being prepared to reach their best level when the season enters its decisive phase.

“I think he has his starting side,” Riolo said. “He has 12 players. Everything is designed to have them physically at their peak in February. When someone is put on the bench, it is not a punishment. There are different levels of standing within the squad.”

Riolo added that Dembélé holds a more prominent place than younger or less established options such as Senny Mayulu. Players with the biggest records, including those who have won two Champions League titles, carry a natural authority within a squad, he argued.

For PSG, Saturday offers a chance to restart domestic business after the break while protecting key legs before City arrive. Dembélé and Mendes may be absent from the Ligue 1 stage, but their rest underlines the wider calculation being made in Paris: the sharpest nights of the campaign are still to come.
