Luka Modric Pays Tribute to Lionel Messi After Argentina Farewell

In the mixed zone after Croatia’s 2-1 defeat to Spain, Luka Modric turned his thoughts beyond the result to Lionel Messi, whose international farewell had shaped the evening’s conversation.

The Croatian midfielder said he was aware that the match marked the end of Messi’s time with Argentina. While regretting the departure, Modric stressed that the decision belonged to the Argentine forward and deserved respect.

“It is sad that he is leaving, but it is his choice and we have to respect it,” Modric said. He reflected on Messi’s achievement with the national side, particularly the World Cup triumph Argentina had long pursued, and described him as one of the outstanding players in the game.

For Modric, the admiration carries the weight of many difficult meetings. The pair have faced each other for their countries and in Spain during Modric’s years at Real Madrid. “Watching him has been a pleasure, although I have suffered a lot against him with Croatia and with Real Madrid,” he said.

“He is a unique player. I wish him the best of luck.”
