Maja Chwalinska completed a stirring comeback to claim the 2026 Dongfeng Voyah Wuhan Open, defeating Britain’s Sonay Kartal 2-6, 6-4, 6-2 in a 2-hour, 43-minute final for the first WTA title of her career.
Key takeaways
- The 16th-seeded Pole recovered from a set and a break behind before winning the last five games of the championship match.
- Chwalinska is projected to rise from No. 22 to a career-best No. 11 in the PIF WTA Rankings.
- Kartal’s run from No. 170 is set to take her to No. 50 after her six-month absence with a back injury.
- The 25-year-old became Poland’s third WTA 1000 singles champion, following Agnieszka Radwanska and Iga Swiatek.
- It was the fourth maiden WTA 1000 title of the season, after Karolina Muchova, Marta Kostyuk and Zheng Qinwen.
Chwalinska turns Wuhan final around
Kartal controlled the opening set and carried that momentum into the second, breaking immediately for a 2-0 advantage. The British player then erased four break opportunities in the following game as Chwalinska struggled to find her timing.
But Chwalinska eventually converted her fifth chance to break back, steadied the contest and took the second set after 71 minutes. The decisive shift came at 4-4 in that set, when the Pole negotiated a pivotal stage of the final to force a third.
In the decider, Chwalinska broke for 3-2 and did not allow Kartal back into the match. Down-the-line winners and a drop-shot-and-lob combination helped her build separation, while she saved three break points when serving for the trophy.
Chwalinska said she had begun the match short of energy and credited Kartal for preventing her from playing freely. As the final developed, however, she felt her attacking intent and the depth of her groundstrokes improve. Above all, she said, she was proud of the fight she produced after the difficult start.
The victory carried particular emotional weight after an uneven period following her Roland Garros final earlier this year. Chwalinska said the response after Paris had been hard to handle, but that she continued to work through those moments and felt rewarded by the Wuhan title.
A demanding route to a landmark title
Chwalinska’s week in Wuhan required repeated recoveries. She came from a set down against Marie Bouzkova in the second round, then defeated 10th seed Iva Jovic and former world No. 3 Maria Sakkari on her way to the last four.
Her semifinal against Swiatek was the first all-Polish semifinal at a WTA-level tournament in the Open Era. Chwalinska trailed 5-3 in the opening set, saved two set points and reeled off four straight games to take it before finishing the match in straight sets.
By beating Swiatek and then Kartal, Chwalinska became the first left-handed player to win a WTA 1000 event since Petra Kvitova’s Miami triumph in 2023. She is also the fourth player since the WTA 1000 format began in 2009 to land her maiden tour title at that level, joining Naomi Osaka at Indian Wells in 2018, Bianca Andreescu at Indian Wells in 2019 and Victoria Mboko in Montreal in 2025.
Chwalinska began the season ranked around No. 140, with a place inside the Top 100 as her target. Now on course for No. 11, she said she was grateful for her current position but still sees considerable room to improve both her tennis and herself.
