Maja Chwalinska swept into the Singapore Tennis Open quarterfinals on Wednesday, overwhelming Oleksandra Oliynykova 6-0, 6-1 in a 59-minute second-round performance at the WTA 500 event.
- Chwalinska conceded only eight points while blanking the Ukrainian in the opening set.
- Oliynykova converted her lone break opportunity in the second set, but Chwalinska maintained control and closed out a 6-1 finish.
The fifth seed did not surrender a set in reaching the last eight and converted six of her eight break points. Chwalinska struck 10 winners and made only seven unforced errors, while Oliynykova produced seven winners but committed 33 unforced errors. Across the entire match, the Pole lost just 20 points.
It was Chwalinska’s second victory over Oliynykova in two career meetings. She had also beaten the Ukrainian at the WTA 125 tournament in Florianopolis earlier this year.
Third WTA-level quarterfinal
The Singapore run gives Chwalinska a third WTA-level quarterfinal appearance of her career. Her previous last-eight runs came in Cluj-Napoca and at Roland-Garros in 2026, where she went on to finish runner-up.
She has now recorded six career victories over Top 50 opposition on the WTA Tour. Her latest came against then-world No. 38 Cristina Bucsa in Cincinnati in 2026. During her Roland-Garros run, Chwalinska defeated four Top 50 players: Elise Mertens, Maria Sakkari, Anna Kalinskaya and Diana Shnaider.
Mertens advances after Krejcikova withdrawal
Chwalinska will meet Mertens for a place in the Singapore semifinals. Mertens moved through when two-time Grand Slam champion Barbora Krejcikova withdrew from their second-round match with a lower-back injury.
The quarterfinal will be the second meeting between Chwalinska and Mertens. Chwalinska won their first match in the second round of this year’s French Open, taking it in straight sets.
