Malang Sarr’s long wait for a first Senegal call-up is set to end in Dakar, with the former Lens defender expected to be included in Patrick Vieira’s first squad as head coach of the Teranga Lions.
Malang Sarr set for first Senegal call-up under Vieira
Vieira will announce his selection on Friday at the Stade Léopold Sédar Senghor, little more than a month after taking charge of Senegal on 18 August. For Sarr, 27, it would bring the chance to represent the country of his parents after a career that previously saw him play eight times for France’s Under-21 side.
The centre-back was left out of Pape Thiaw’s 28-man Senegal group for the most recent World Cup, but has now moved into Vieira’s plans. Sarr spent the 2024-26 period at RC Lens before joining Saudi club Neom Sports Club on a three-year contract on 22 July.
He left Riyadh on Wednesday for Paris and is due to continue on to Africa ahead of the international gathering. Senegal have three fixtures scheduled during the upcoming window, beginning with Africa Cup of Nations qualifying trips to Mozambique on 25 September and Ethiopia four days later.
The squad will then return to France for a friendly against Comoros at Marseille’s Stade-Vélodrome on Sunday 4 October.
