Manchester City Appeals Ruling Over 114 Premier League Financial Breaches

Manchester City’s long-running financial case has returned to the centre of English football’s attention after the club appealed against an Independent Commission decision that upheld 114 of the 115 alleged Premier League financial-rule breaches.

The eventual punishment remains uncertain, with possible sanctions understood to include the removal of titles won during the period under scrutiny. For former City captain Kyle Walker, now at Burnley, the legal process has cast a shadow over an era defined on the pitch by trophies and landmark nights across England and Europe.

“It clearly does not look good,” Walker said. “The matter is being appealed, and I do not think it would help me or anyone involved if I started speaking in detail about the legal side of it.”

The commission found that more than €900 million in owner-related funding had been used to increase declared revenue, allowing City to meet the Premier League’s financial regulations.

Walker reflects on City’s trophy years

Walker was a central figure in City’s most successful modern spell, serving as captain during a period in which the club collected major domestic and continental honours. He said the players’ memories of those achievements would endure regardless of the final ruling.

“We had many great years together, celebrating a lot of trophies,” he said. “Whatever happens, nobody can take away the fact that we experienced those evenings.”

The former England international said the outcome now rests entirely on the appeal process. “What will be, will be,” Walker added. “It is all down to the appeal and what follows from that.”

He also stressed that the squad wanted its success to be regarded as properly earned, pointing to the work put in by players and the commitment of supporters who travelled around the country and abroad to follow the side.

“We want to be seen as a team that won trophies in the right way,” Walker said. “We worked extremely hard for them, and the fans did too. They travelled everywhere, including overseas, and they deserve to have those experiences as well.”
