Sanctions could alter the European picture
The available penalties range from a reprimand or financial fines to points deductions and, at the most severe end, expulsion from the Premier League. Any points penalty could be imposed immediately after the ruling or applied retrospectively.
That distinction matters well beyond Manchester. A retrospective adjustment could affect previous league placings, including qualification positions for the Champions League and the income attached to them. British reports have also raised the prospect of titles being removed from City in the most serious scenario.
Rivals have reserved compensation claims
Liverpool, Arsenal, Manchester United and Tottenham issued legal notices to City in 2024, preserving their right to pursue compensation should serious charges be upheld.
Potential claims could exceed £100 million each, or about €116 million, with clubs said to have assessed losses caused by missing out on Champions League football and other commercial income. Those figures could rise further once interest is considered.
For clubs on the edge of Europe’s qualifying places, the case is therefore about more than a domestic disciplinary verdict. It concerns prize money, broadcasting income, sponsorship value and the competitive opportunities that accompany a place in the Champions League.
Wider political concern
Officials from the United Arab Emirates have reportedly warned that heavy sanctions against City could harm diplomatic and economic relations between the UAE and the United Kingdom.
Until the penalty is determined, City’s immediate sporting position and the implications for their English rivals remain unresolved. But the prospect of revised standings, contested honours and major compensation claims means the consequences may be felt across the European game long after the ruling arrives.
