Olympique de Marseille are fighting on two fronts as the French season moves into a tense stretch: results must improve on the pitch, while the club’s financial recovery remains under scrutiny off it.
Marseille, currently 13th in Ligue 1 after a difficult start, have not fully met the commitments made to the DNCG during their summer hearing. The club had been asked to cut spending and raise significant transfer income to cover losses.
Quick facts
- Marseille are already operating under limits on their wage bill and transfer fees.
- The DNCG could impose provisional measures during the winter.
- Relegation is not currently being considered.
- A points deduction at the start of a future Ligue 1 season is a possible outcome.
- Any sporting penalty would depend on Marseille failing to restore their finances by 30 June 2027.
The club have made financial efforts, but their position remains fragile. A further punishment is possible because the undertakings given to the financial watchdog have not yet been fulfilled.
A major fine appears unlikely, with Marseille already under severe financial pressure. There is also little appetite to burden the new leadership for problems created under previous decision-makers, particularly while the club attempts to rebuild its balance sheet.
Instead, the potential sanction under consideration is sporting. A drop to a lower division is not on the agenda at this stage, but Marseille could begin a future top-flight campaign with points deducted if their financial situation has not been corrected by the June 2027 deadline.
The threat is not unexpected at the Vélodrome. Marseille intend to present the DNCG with a detailed file setting out the measures already taken and their financial outlook for the 2026-27 season.
The work has continued since Stéphane Richard became club president, but Marseille say they are preparing for every possible scenario. Their stated aim is not limited to the next DNCG meeting: the club want to put Olympique de Marseille back on a stable, sustainable financial course.
