At Stade Raymond Kopa, Angers briefly gave the afternoon a sense of danger before Marseille tore through the closing stages. The visitors struck five times in a wild Ligue 1 round-seven contest, turning a narrow lead into a 5-2 victory on Sunday.
Angers strike first but Marseille respond
Angers made the sharper early breakthrough in the 14th minute. Lilian Raolisoa headed in from close range to put the home side ahead, after a start in which Marseille had already seen Igor Paixão and Tochukwu Nnadi miss the target.
Marseille steadily built pressure through corners and wide deliveries. Paixão was denied with a header, while Amine Gouiri, Timothy Weah and Paixão all had efforts blocked or saved before the equaliser arrived.
- 14th minute: Raolisoa headed Angers into a 1-0 lead.
- 37th minute: Himad Abdelli levelled from close range, meeting Weah’s cross with a header.
- 43rd minute: Nouhoum Kamissoko headed Marseille in front after Emerson delivered from a corner.
Marseille went into half-time 2-1 ahead, although Angers had shown enough on the counter-attack to suggest that the game was not settled.
Gouiri recovers after penalty save
The second half remained open. Emerson had a shot blocked shortly after the restart, while Paixão again failed to find the target. At the other end, Angers lost Emmanuel Biumla to injury and brought on Joseph Kalulu in the 72nd minute.
Angers had a major chance to draw level before Marseille extended their advantage. Prosper Peter first headed wide from a Jim Allevinah cross, then struck the crossbar from inside the area in the 66th minute.
Marseille were awarded a penalty in the 58th minute after Yassin Belkhdim fouled Gouiri in the box. Gouiri’s spot-kick was saved low to the goalkeeper’s right, but the forward responded immediately. A minute later, he finished low into the left corner from the centre of the area following a free-kick situation to make it 3-1.
Angers refused to disappear. Nnadi was booked after conceding a 73rd-minute penalty for a foul on Carlens Arcus, and Amine El Ouazzani converted calmly with a low left-footed effort to reduce the deficit to 3-2.
Late Marseille surge settles a seven-goal contest
The home side had briefly reopened the contest, but Marseille found another gear in the final minutes. Harit made it 4-2 in the 83rd minute with a right-footed strike from outside the penalty area, supplied by Nnadi.
Paixão then completed the scoring two minutes later. Weah headed the ball into his path and the winger finished right-footed from the middle of the box.
- 60th minute: Gouiri scored Marseille’s third after having his penalty saved moments earlier.
- 75th minute: El Ouazzani converted from the spot for Angers.
- 83rd minute: Harit restored Marseille’s two-goal cushion.
- 85th minute: Paixão added Marseille’s fifth, with Weah providing the headed assist.
Angers continued to press in stoppage time, with Peter forcing a low save and Bané Diatta having an effort blocked, but Marseille saw out six minutes of added time without further damage.
Substitutions and key incidents
Marseille introduced Nayef Aguerd for Geoffrey Kondogbia on the hour, then sent on Angel Gomes and Keyliane Abdallah in the 80th minute. Ulisses Garcia and Neal Maupay entered in the 90th minute for Harit and Nnadi respectively.
Angers used Prosper Peter for Louis Mouton in the 57th minute, while Harouna Djibirin replaced Jim Allevinah and Kalulu came on for the injured Biumla. Anthony Bermont and Bané Diatta were also introduced late on for Amine Sbaï and El Ouazzani.
Biumla received a yellow card in the 68th minute before departing injured, while Nnadi was cautioned for the challenge that led to Angers’ penalty. Marseille leave Angers with five goals, three points and a result that gathered force after a tense middle period.
