Under the whistles at the Vélodrome on Thursday night, Marseille’s brief domestic lift disappeared as Olympiacos left with a 1-0 Europa League win.
The Ligue 1 news
OM had beaten Troyes 2-0 in Ligue 1 on Sunday, but the European defeat brought them back to a difficult reality. Bruno Genesio has now suffered six losses in his first eight matches since taking charge in Marseille.
Marseille produced a more encouraging display against the Greek side than the result suggested, yet once again lacked the depth and cutting edge to turn control into a positive outcome. The squad remains weakened following the club’s summer cost-cutting measures.
The reaction around the club is becoming increasingly severe. Daniel Riolo said he had gone beyond criticism and now felt pity for the team, describing the situation as deeply worrying after Marseille needed to battle past Troyes before losing at home in Europe.
He questioned when the players would finally respond, adding that they had again left the pitch with their heads down and that Genesio had little left to say after another defeat.
Walid Acherchour also argued that Marseille should not have lost to Olympiacos, a side he did not regard as being among Europe’s strongest. He warned that the greater danger over the coming weeks could be indifference around a club whose supporters have so far shown patience.
That patience was tested at the final whistle, with the Vélodrome crowd making its frustration clear as the Marseille players departed.
Next appointment in France
Marseille do not return to the Vélodrome for another 10 days, when Le Havre will visit in Ligue 1.
Before then, Genesio’s side face two away trips: Angers in the league on Sunday at 15:00, followed by a Europa League match at Sturm Graz next Thursday at 18:45.
