Relief arrived late at Stade de la Source. France’s Under-21 side had turned a comfortable night into a nervy one against Luxembourg, but Mathys Tel’s 76th-minute header sealed a 3-2 win and qualification for the 2027 European Championship.
Steve Ngoura struck twice in the first half for Gérald Baticle’s team in Orléans, before a red card for Joane Gadou and two Luxembourg goals brought the contest level. Tel, sent on after Jean-Mattéo Bahoya’s injury, restored France’s lead from Saïmon Bouabré’s corner.
Quick facts
- France Under-21s beat Luxembourg 3-2 in Orléans.
- Steve Ngoura scored in the 10th and 25th minutes.
- Joane Gadou was dismissed in the 50th minute.
- Luxembourg captain Englaro scored from a free-kick and then a penalty.
- Mathys Tel headed the winner in the 76th minute.
- France have qualified before Tuesday’s final qualifier against Switzerland.
A draw would have been enough to secure France’s place at the finals, but the hosts initially looked set to make it a straightforward victory. They were without Senny Mayulu and Ethan Mbappé, both injured during the 2-0 win in Estonia, while Leny Yoro had joined the senior France squad.
Ngoura, who had also scored in Estonia, made the early breakthrough. Giovani Versini, making his first start, sent in a shot that lacked curl, and the former Le Havre forward reacted sharply at close range to turn it in after 10 minutes.
France doubled their advantage midway through the first half. Captain Nathan Zézé delivered a long pass into Ngoura’s path, and the Cercle Bruges attacker controlled it on his chest before finishing with his right foot.
Bahoya’s early departure in the 35th minute, with Tel taking his place, did not immediately alter France’s control. Bouabré had been entertaining the Orléans crowd with his close control and technical touches, while Luxembourg had offered little threat before the interval.
Red card changes the match
The game swung sharply five minutes after the restart. Gadou lost possession in a dangerous area and brought down Englaro as the Luxembourg player moved towards goal, leaving the referee to show a direct red card for denying a clear scoring opportunity.
Englaro took the resulting free-kick and reduced the deficit in the 53rd minute, with Issiaka Touré unable to deal convincingly with the attempt. France, now down to 10 men, struggled to regain their earlier rhythm.
Luxembourg drew level in the 68th minute. Bouabré attempted to clear inside his own box but caught Carolei’s leg, and Englaro converted the penalty to complete his double.
Tel delivered the decisive response eight minutes later. Bouabré’s corner found the forward, whose header put France back in front and ended Luxembourg’s comeback hopes.
France handled the closing stages with greater composure to protect the result. Baticle’s side will finish qualifying against Switzerland on Tuesday, already assured of a place at the tournament in Albania and Serbia, scheduled from 16 June to 3 July 2027.
