Matthias Sammer to Remain Borussia Dortmund Adviser Until 2028

Borussia Dortmund have secured continuity around the club’s advisory structure. Matthias Sammer’s contract runs until 2028, with chief executive Carsten Cramer confirming that the extension was agreed during the summer.

  • Sammer, 59, will remain a Borussia Dortmund adviser through 2028.
  • Cramer said Dortmund value Sammer’s work behind the scenes and the experience he brings.
  • The former midfielder has held his advisory post since 2018.
  • Sammer spent five years as a Dortmund player, winning two German titles and the 1997 Champions League.
  • He also joined the club’s coaching staff after ending his playing career.
  • Dortmund extended the contracts of their executive trio in late September: Cramer, Lars Ricken and Thomas Treß.
  • Cramer became chairman of the management board as part of that reshuffle.

What it changes in the Bundesliga week

There is no immediate squad or matchday consequence. Dortmund have instead removed uncertainty around a senior football voice who works largely away from public view.

Cramer said the club were pleased to continue with Sammer, citing his presence in the stands, his background work and his willingness to share his experience. The agreement keeps a former Dortmund champion and European Cup winner inside the club structure for the next phase under Cramer, Ricken and Treß.
