Mbappé Injury Absence Raises Questions Over Real Madrid Relations

Kylian Mbappé’s international break has continued to make noise well beyond the France camp. After leaving the squad injured following the opening match against Turkey, the Real Madrid forward returned to the Spanish capital for medical tests described as reassuring. But a succession of appearances away from Madrid has since fuelled debate around his recovery and his relationship with the club.

Mbappé was first seen in a Paris nightclub with his partner Ester Exposito, before sharing footage of a cycling outing in the Swiss Alps a few days later. The video, set to the song “The Good Guys, the Bad Guys”, drew particular attention in Spain, where some observers interpreted it as a pointed response to criticism of his activities while injured.

The issue has been sharpened by José Mourinho’s recent warning about footballers riding bicycles during periods of injury. The Portuguese coach said players should not take that kind of risk, even if they do it away from the club, because of the possibility of a fall. Mbappé’s video was consequently viewed by some as a challenge to that position.

Tensions alleged behind the noise

Commentator Dani Senabre believes Mbappé’s public posts have been deliberate rather than careless. He argued that the France captain understands the impact of his actions and would not publish an image or enter a confrontation by accident.

Senabre also claimed that Madrid’s hierarchy had begun circulating damaging narratives about their No. 9 amid a series of recent disagreements. Four potential flashpoints have been cited: the departure of a club physiotherapist, differing views over public comments about refereeing, the handling of Mbappé’s Ballon d’Or ambitions, and an incident involving a Ceuta shirt.

One claim suggested that Mbappé had sought active support from Real Madrid for his 2026 Ballon d’Or campaign and had been denied it. The forward responded with irony on social media, dismissing that theory himself.

Reports in Spain have also said Mourinho addressed the latest controversy directly with Mbappé at Valdebebas on Tuesday morning. The coach was said to have told him that he would protect him when questioned publicly, but would not defend him inside the club.

For now, the medical examinations have offered reassurance over the injury that ended his France duty early. Yet with every post and every trip being scrutinised, Mbappé’s break has become a fresh talking point before club football resumes.
