In Turkey, the only goal of France’s 1-0 Nations League win came with an immediate shadow: Kylian Mbappé scored, grimaced and soon had to leave the pitch with a knee problem.

France captain Mbappé will return to Spain after suffering the injury on Friday night. The Real Madrid forward struck the decisive goal but appeared to hurt his knee in the act of shooting.
He did not celebrate normally, instead showing clear discomfort. Mbappé briefly went off, attempted to continue, then went down again and was replaced by Désiré Doué.
France coach Zinedine Zidane said after the match that the early signs were concerning.
“Unfortunately, it does not look good,” Zidane said. “He will probably have to return home. We will not take any risks. He hyperextended his knee when he took the shot. It is not particularly encouraging.”
Mbappé’s withdrawal has subsequently been confirmed for France’s next three matches. Further medical examinations will establish the precise nature of the injury and how long he could be unavailable.

France travel to Belgium on Monday evening for their second Nations League fixture and the second match of Zidane’s tenure. They will do so without their captain, with Mbappé heading back to Real Madrid for assessment.
