Messi Bows Out for Argentina with Goal and Two Assists Against Benin

Buenos Aires gave Lionel Messi a farewell measured in noise, memory and one last decisive performance at El Monumental. Before a crowd of 85,000, Argentina’s 39-year-old captain closed a 21-year senior international career with a goal and two assists in a win over Benin, while Nicolás Otamendi also marked his own goodbye to the national side.

The news from the club

The occasion belonged to Messi from the opening moments. He showed his emotion during the national anthem, and the match paused in the 10th minute as the entire stadium rose to salute the player who has reshaped Argentina’s modern football history.

Yet there was no ceremonial retreat from the contest. Messi continued to drop into pockets, demand possession and direct attacks, with Julián Álvarez particularly lively alongside him in an Argentina side that controlled much of the first half.

Messi twice came close to opening the scoring before the interval, but Benin’s goalkeeper produced a series of important saves. Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez was also required at the other end, ensuring the visitors retained a competitive presence on an emotional evening.

Otamendi broke the deadlock three minutes after the restart. The defender arrived at close range to turn in a corner delivered by Messi, giving the veteran centre-back a fitting contribution on his farewell appearance.

Messi then helped introduce a possible figure of Argentina’s future. Nico Paz had been on the pitch for only a minute when he took a pass from the captain and struck a left-footed finish into the far corner. Paz wears number 18, the first shirt number Messi had with the senior national team, and his role in the evening carried a symbolic link between generations.

In the 70th minute, Messi supplied his own final international goal, sending a penalty high into the corner. He had chances to add to it: Benin’s goalkeeper denied him again, one unusual opportunity went astray, and another effort came back from the post.

The final numbers nevertheless captured his influence: one goal, two assists and a victory on the night Argentina bid farewell to its defining player of the era. Messi leaves the Albiceleste by choice rather than through any apparent physical decline, still capable of deciding matches with the left foot that carried Argentina through so many landmark occasions, including its World Cup triumph.
