Michael Olise Sent Off as Bayern Draw With Viking FK, Misses Arsenal Trip

The late-night sting in Munich was not only the 3-3 scoreline against Viking FK. Bayern Munich watched victory slip away after Michael Olise’s dismissal, and the French winger will now miss next Wednesday’s Champions League trip to Arsenal.

Olise sent off as Bayern lose control

Olise was shown a second yellow card on Tuesday night, leaving Bayern with 10 men against the Norwegian side. The German champions could not protect their advantage in the closing stages and had to settle for a draw.

  • Bayern Munich drew 3-3 with Viking FK in the Champions League.
  • Olise was dismissed after receiving a second booking.
  • The French wide player’s suspension rules him out of the visit to Arsenal.
  • The Arsenal match is scheduled for next Wednesday and is Bayern’s third game of the league phase.

Kompany places responsibility on his winger

Vincent Kompany made no attempt to soften his assessment of the incident. The Bayern coach said Olise’s decision had directly damaged the team’s chances of taking all three points.

“It is entirely his fault, and he knows it too,” Kompany said. “You cannot say that you deserve to win a match when you make individual decisions like that, even if I do not think we played badly.”

The Belgian coach spoke with Olise after the final whistle and said the former Crystal Palace player understood the consequences of his red card.

“He knows he made a mistake. You can see that he is sorry about what happened and regrets hurting the team,” Kompany said. “It is not dramatic; these things happen. This was not a final or a semi-final, but moments like this can have a decisive effect on a season.”

A lesson before the Arsenal test

Kompany said Olise had allowed himself to be drawn into an unnecessary confrontation, arguing that Bayern’s superiority should have made the winger more disciplined rather than more reactive.

“I told him that his opponent had been smarter than him,” Kompany said. “When you are clearly better than your opponent, sometimes you simply have to play your game and focus on being the better team instead of being dragged into needless situations.”

The Bayern manager accepted that Olise is likely to be targeted by opponents, but insisted that provocation could not excuse his response.

“Michael is a player opponents will always try to provoke, but that is not an excuse,” he said.

With the Arsenal fixture now beyond Olise’s reach, Kompany wants Bayern to take something from a damaging European evening. “We cannot change it now,” he said. “Hopefully we can look back at this as an episode from which we learned a lesson.”
