Micky van de Ven Rescues Tottenham Draw at Manchester United

Manchester United and Tottenham shared a 1-1 draw at Old Trafford, a result that eased neither club’s wider strain as their domestic problems continue to colour the weeks around Europe. Bryan Mbeumo’s outstanding second-half strike appeared set to lift United, only for Tottenham captain Micky van de Ven to force a late equaliser amid eight minutes of added time.

For United, still trying to regain rhythm after a 4-0 Champions League opening win over Sabah was followed by a poor Premier League run, it was another night without the clean turnaround Michael Carrick wanted. Tottenham remain deep in trouble after a start that had produced only two points from five league matches.

Quick facts

  • Final score: Manchester United 1-1 Tottenham Hotspur.
  • Bryan Mbeumo put United ahead with a spectacular goal.
  • Micky van de Ven headed Tottenham level late on from Mateus Fernandes’ delivery.
  • Tottenham finished with 10 men after Rodrigo Bentancur was sent off.
  • Stuart Attwell refereed the match at Old Trafford.

Tottenham, coached by Roberto De Zerbi, began with greater urgency and repeatedly exposed the space between United’s lines. Dominic Solanke tested Senne Lammens at close range after an early error from the goalkeeper, while Mohammed Kudus, Sávio and Archie Gray drove much of the visitors’ attacking pressure.

United struggled to keep possession in the opening stages. Lisandro Martínez had to cut out a dangerous Sávio pass inside the box, Harry Maguire made a crucial intervention against Mateus Fernandes, and Kudus sent a low shot narrowly beyond the far post after Sávio created the opening from the left.

Conor Gallagher had Tottenham’s clearest chances before the interval. Two rebounds fell his way, but neither produced the finish required, while Solanke also sent a tame attempt at Lammens.

Bruno Fernandes increasingly became United’s route back into the contest, organising possession and trying to release Matheus Cunha and Amad Diallo. Diallo had an effort saved by Antonín Kinsky, but the hosts went into half-time level after a disjointed first 45 minutes in which neither side could afford a draw.

United find a breakthrough, then lose control

Carrick changed the shape of the game after the restart, introducing Diogo Dalot, Joshua Zirkzee and Carlos Baleba for Youri Tielemans, Leny Yoro and Diallo. United began to press with greater authority, with Zirkzee seeing a shot blocked after a precise Fernandes cross and Cunha winning a corner following a run down the left.

Tottenham continued to waste promising positions. Solanke somehow headed over when unmarked from a Sávio cross, while Destiny Udogie was flagged offside after firing just past the post.

The breakthrough came through Mbeumo, whose superb finish gave Old Trafford the goal it had been waiting for. Kinsky then denied the forward a second from outside the area as United looked to protect their lead.

De Zerbi responded by sending on Bentancur and Omar Marmoush for Kudus and Lucas Bergvall, later adding Mateus Fernandes. Bentancur gave Tottenham added control in midfield, but the tie turned increasingly volatile as challenges intensified.

Bentancur was dismissed after a confrontation with Luke Shaw. The Uruguay midfielder had been involved in a reckless challenge around Bruno Fernandes and then appeared to headbutt Shaw following a heated exchange, with players from both teams required to separate the pair.

Martínez was also booked for a heavy tackle on James Maddison as the match became fractured. Tottenham pushed forward despite their numerical disadvantage, leaving Van de Ven exposed as their only defender at times and giving United counter-attacking opportunities.

Van de Ven’s late intervention

Tottenham’s pressure finally produced a reward in added time. Mateus Fernandes delivered a set-piece from the flank and Van de Ven, falling backwards with his back to goal, headed the ball into the net to silence much of Old Trafford.

Marcus Rashford and Ayden Heaven entered for United late on, but there was no final winner. Tottenham had finished the stronger side, though the point did little to soften the concern around a team that arrived at Old Trafford bottom of the Premier League.

United’s European campaign had begun with a convincing win over Sabah, but their domestic form remains unsettled. Tottenham, after investing more than €300 million in new players, leave Manchester with a point and another reminder that converting pressure into goals remains their most pressing issue.
